How Long Do Children's Shoes Last?

As adults, shoes tend to last as long as it takes them to go out of fashion or get enough holes in them that they are suddenly as much use as wearing an old carrier bag on your feet. When it comes to children’s shoes however, fashion and wear will vary rarely be a factor, as their feet will usually outgrow the shoes before it becomes a problem.
So how long do children’s shoes last then? Obviously, it will vary from child to child, but in their early years children can go up two sizes every year, meaning that unless you want to leave your child with serious foot and even back problems in later life or a noticeable limp in the present day, then it is worth checking your child’s feet regularly.
The chances are that normal shoes and school shoes will have to be replaced at least once a year, although it would not be uncommon for him or her to outgrow them within twelve weeks. In fact, anything between one and nine months would be classed as normal for children to outgrow shoes depending on their age.
The key is to be aware how fast their feet will grow and keep regular tabs on whether the shoe is too tight or not. With such a broad timescale of possibility, just leaving a generic number of weeks before you look into getting new trainers or schools shoes will undoubtedly lead to your child’s feet being damaged.
Check regularly – once a week is probably about right – for any cuts or bruises that may have been from their shoes and check the gap at the end of the shoe. Anything less than the width of one finger is a very good sign that those shoes may well be outgrown.
