Reebok Freestyle is a women’s athletic shoe style that was introduced in 1982 and designed for aerobic exercise. Evaluation & Treatment of Overpronation in Runners

Pronation is a natural movement that occurs in gait when the arch flattens upon weight bearing. This motion allows the foot to absorb the weight of the body without causing undo stress & shock on the foot, ankle and leg structures.

During pronation, the outside edge of the heel makes contact with the ground. The heel rolls inward causing the arch to “loosen up” and stretch out. As the body moves forward, the arch serves as a “spring board” to absorb the shock of weight bearing. As the person moves forward the arch increases in height as the ball of the foot bends in preparation for “toe off”. The foot moves through the air until the heel strikes the ground again, and the gait cycle repeats itself.

When an athlete overpronates, several things break down. Usually the center or inner heel makes contact with the ground instead of the outside edge. Due to the lack of rolling of the heel, there is less shock absorbing ability. The arch does not have the stability to absorb the stress of weight bearing and collapses, causing problems such as shin splints, metatarsalgia,bunions, hammertoes and plantar fasciitis. Hip and back pain can also occur due to inadequate shock absorption. Since the arch is unable to absorb most of the shock of weight bearing, the forces are transmitted elsewhere.

There are many causes of overpronation. Congenital flat feet is the most common cause of overpronation. Obesity, pregnancy, diabetes, neuropathy are other medical conditions that can cause or aggravate overpronation. Barefoot activities & poor fitting shoes and poor conditioning increase the stress on the arch and can potentiate overpronation. Overpronation symptoms are more common with runners due to the continuous pounding that occurs with prolonged running.

The diagnosis of overpronation can be done simply by checking your shoes, and the wear pattern of the heels and forefoot. Check to make sure that both shoes wear symmetrically. If one shoe wears down on the outside, and one on the inside, a limb length discrepancy may be the cause. If both heels wear on the center or inside, then you may be overpronating. Your doctor or therapist will examine your feet and determine if you are overpronating.

Treatment of overpronation usually involves modification of your shoegear, arch supports and orthotics. A well qualified running store can also be a great source of information on running shoes that are indicated for overpronators.

Many running shoe manufacturers make shoes specific for overpronators. These shoes are usually more rigid around the counter of the shoe (around the heel), to help stabilize the heel during heel strike. Walking heel to toe allows your muscles to most properly compensate for the unsteadiness of the heel on the shoe. Walking toe to heel has a reverse effect and muscles tend to over compensate quickly to regain balance, resulting in ankle injuries.

Step 3. First Steps
Now that you have your shoes and you are consciously thinking about keeping your balance, you are ready to start walking in those sexy high heel shoes. First start off by stretching your muscles around your ankle and your calf. Sit on a chair and put your shoes on. Stand up slowly, being sure to have equal pressure throughout your whole foot, including the heel. Take short slow steps, again keeping your feet strait and close together. You may feel the muscles around your ankle contract to compensate for the heel. As you feel more comfortable, take quicker strides in the same fashion. You’ll be walking in your high heels before you know it.

Step 4. Increase Height
You’ve mastered your beginner heel height and are feeling very confident in your abilities of walking in high heels, but don’t over do it. When you are ready to take the next step, only try increase the heel height by ½ to 1 inch at a time. A 1 inch high heel has a more dramatic effect than you may think. This gives your muscles time to adjust to the added pressures and strains and allows them to grow gradually as you increase your heel height.

Please note that while sexy high heel shoes are a must in today’s fashion, they can cause health problems. Strained ankles, deep vein thrombosis, shin splints, and shortening of some of the muscles can all occur from wearing high heel shoes. Some employees at an area factory say moldy shoes from China are making them sick.

A health and safety official at Cove Shoes in Martinsburg confirmed a handful of people have complained of a sore throat and one woman had an allergic reaction.

Ralph Lewis says the shipment somehow got wet on the way over from China, and mold grew on the shoes. Cove Shoes makes almost everything in house, but they do import some shoes.

Employees started cleaning the mold off the shoes, and then a few of them started complaining of sore throats. One woman actually had an allergic reaction and was taken to the hospital. She was treated and actually returned to work that day.

Management got a call from OSHA Tuesday that someone had filed an informal complaint about the mold.

Lewis says employees are no longer handling the moldy shoes.  He says the mold on the shoes is actually a pretty common variety. He says it’s not infectious and it can be found just about anywhere.

He says they’re looking into finding a different way to clean the shoes so employees wouldn’t be exposed to the mold. or they could sub-contract the work out to a company that specializes in this kind of thing.

He also said they would have done that ordinarily but those companies are backed up. There have been a lot of mold cases linked to the rainy summer in China.

Lewis says the health of the employees is the most important thing so they’re going to be more careful with their incoming shipments in the future.

Choosing and Fitting the Right Shoe for Your Child

As parents, we always want the best for our children. Did you know that most of our kids are wearing shoes that are too small? Don’t feel too bad, it happens to us all (yes, even your friendly neighborhood Houston podiatrist).

We are conditioned to our own adult feet, which are no longer growing. We wear our shoes until they die, and often well past their demise. We buy shoes out of desire, but not necessity. Kids are different.

The feet of children are rapidly growing and developing and need room to do so. But don’t give them too much room. The old days of buying shoes with “room to grow” were just our parents trying to stretch the usage of the shoes. Don’t do that! Kids need shoes that fit them properly, just like you do.

What do you look for when you are buying shoes for children? First of all – keep shoes off of your infant! Babies who are not yet walking should be barefoot or wearing socks or soft booties…nothing more. Oh, and I don’t care if they are so cute or match the outfit. Keep them off! Babies need to explore their feet for proper development and feel what it is like to stand and balance barefoot. They need that natural feedback, so let them have it.

I’ll relent a bit once the kid starts walking. The shoe, however, needs to be flexible. If you push up under the toe area while holding the shoe, the shoe should flex upwards with minimal resistance. Toddlers’ feet also do not need any arch support, so don’t look for shoes that have it.

This changes between ages 3 and 4 when you may notice some in-toeing, out-toeing, toe walking, or excessive stumbling. Children this age don’t have the ability to compensate for biomechanical forces and issues like adults do. Their pediatrician may tell you that the child will grow out of it. Even so, what most commonly happens is that kids just develop the ability to compensate for those biomechanical forces and the mechanics lead to problems down the road. Identifying issues early and putting a child into a custom foot support, called an orthotic, when needed will allow the kid to develop around a more mechanically correct position. Because of this, the correction that an orthotic device provides to a child may become permanent.

Also at this age, kids start wearing shoes that are more familiar in appearance you your adult shoes. Many athletic shoe companies will make sizes for children. You should also buy a shoe according to the activity, just like you do for adults. For instance a running shoe for kids who enjoy running (not playing, I’m talking about running). The rule of thumb is to have about a half-inch between the longest toe and the end of the shoe.

Your child’s feet are crucial to their happiness. Kids are built to go nonstop – bundles of energy to run, jump, play, and climb. If you see your kid sitting out during a game, or refusing to walk when you are out shopping, don’t chalk it up to laziness. First check to see if the shoes are too small. If they’re not, consider taking the child to a podiatrist to see if there is anything more you can do to get your child active once again.

Keds were the original “sneakers” – a name adopted because of the flexible, rubber sole that enabled you to “sneak” up behind someone without them noticing.  The brand originated in 1916 and was produced by a company known as US Rubber (now called Uniroyal).  Originally, the company had wanted to call the shoes “Peds”, the Latin term for feet.  But the name was already taken and so the “P” was replaced with a “K” and a new branding giant was born.  

With their canvas tops and rubber bottoms, Keds were everywhere.  They were used both for athletic activity and for stylish casual wear.   They were particularly popular from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s when they were worn with “slouch socks” or leggings and were popular among teen idols.  But the sneakers were worn by people of all ages, perhaps most notably by Grandma Gatewood who hiked the entire 2,168 mile Appalachian Trail wearing Keds in 1955.

In 1949, a new line of Keds specifically designed for athletics was released under the new name “Pro-Keds”.  These athletic shoes were intended particularly for basketball and were worn by some of the biggest basketball stars and teams at the time.  Eventually these Pro-Keds would play a major role in New York City’s nascent hip-hop community.  Styles such as Royal Canvas, Court King and Royal Master are still in demand today.  

Today you can purchase Keds in several different styles and colors.  The company produces ballet flats, Mary Janes, skimmers, slip-on Keds, sandals, mules and wedges in addition to sneakers.  Keds are a particularly popular brand for children (maybe because moms can throw them in the wash…?) and come in a range of sizes and styles for infants and toddlers.  For example, the Keds Scooter for Infants is particularly popular.  Not only does it look adorable on baby’s feet, but also it’s designed with a padded collar and soft interior that will keep your little one’s feet comfortable.  Shoes for toddlers such as the Little Kid on Deck Velcro Slip-On are easy for children to put-on and fasten themselves.  No need for Mom to kneel down and tie laces!
Keds have also made it easy to customize your sneakers with photographs, fun designs and colors of your choice.  During the 2008 US Election, for example, “Obama Keds” became popular with enthusiastic voters sporting the image of the President printed across the colorful canvas of their Keds sneakers.  We’ll have to see what Keds comes up with next!
